OLD PORT
WISMAR

As a fresh platform for contemporary applied arts, FANGFRISCH presents a lively selection of outstanding works by professional artists from all parts of Germany. In the heart of the Hanseatic city of Wismar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this new trade fair in northeastern Germany invites visitors to discover.

It was devised in the “Landesverband Angewandte Kunst MV e.V.” and is organized by members of the association mainly on a voluntary basis.

With this fair we would like to offer craftsmen, designers and artists a worthy setting to present their work to an open-minded audience interested in art. Our fair sees itself as a mediator between artists and those interested in art and is intended to make current developments visible.

Applied art takes processes from traditional crafts and translates them into high quality contemporary, often timeless forms. Thus, the exhibitors’ works are grounded in an excellent knowledge of a craft and point beyond it. We find that exciting.

An object that endures beyond things that can be quickly bought and thrown away, that speaks to us in our time, is rooted in today and points beyond. It was born out of a desire to experiment and sometimes to cross personal boundaries; it plays with what is just feasible, with what is inimitable.

In order to create this unmistakable, it is not enough to know the respective craft perfectly and to repeat what has been done exactly the same way for a hundred years and must not and should not be done differently.

Nevertheless, this craft knowledge is humanity knowledge of inestimable value. Those who know how a fabric works, how clay behaves when it glows, who can join wood, form molten glass or master the almost lost technique of fine weaving…. knows in his hands and in the mind much about what is necessary to think beyond and invent special.

With the willingness to experiment and the innovative power of the artists and designers in the field of applied arts, the knowledge and skills of the old crafts can remain alive.

The Hanseatic city of Wismar, is located near Rostock and Schwerin, Hamburg, Lübeck, Copenhagen and Berlin are not far away and even in early autumn many guests from all over the world come to the city. Here, with our new fair, we want to establish another important beacon for the visibility of works in the applied arts.
